>> eugene, final point, you've got the last 30 seconds. >> all of that is exactly right. they want this president to be seen as someone who is helping the everyday americans and when you have those black voters and i talked to the folks that he's talked to they feel differently about him and now you have the president explaining the kinds of things that he has done for them, and that is something that this administration has failed to do. we have a lot of time to go before that ends, but they'll be doing that. >> all right. great conversation. that is all for today. thank you for watching. we will be back next week because if it's sunday, it's "meet the press." our freedoms are going to be on the ballot this november. donald trump and the republicans are trying to take our freedoms

trump idolizes him and boasts about having his endorsement. tell us what this means for the campaign ahead. how will democrats try to use this as an issue? >> well, they've already been using it. as you've seen, joe biden has highlighted the fact that the former president has cozied up to someone who's known for his -- i can't even speak -- for his criticism on democracy, his criticism on free speech, his hostility toward immigrants and just being a very difficult person when it comes to trying to put forward an agenda that would be winsome to many people outside of trump's base. >> yeah. there were moments where trump wishes that he could rule the united states like orban does hungary. so let's talk about the weekend, this split screen here. trump and biden both in georgia, key battleground state, traditionally. polls show trump up slightly, and the president's team has

acknowledged winning it this year probably harder than it was in 2020. tell us a little more about what we heard from each man, their respective messages, and particularly as they aim toward african american voters. >> well, one thing i think we realize about this election that we learned in 2020 is that it will be won by swing voters, or shall we say independent voters, people who are undecided, not in either parties. these are the individuals they're trying to turn out. they need new voters. they need voters who perhaps consider the previous guy but are maybe upset with how he's done and are looking to make a change or along with voters not wed to any clear ideology but aren't really pleased with the alternative. so that's where you're going to see a lot of the messages directed toward, trying to get these people to be willing to participate instead of sitting this election out. >> eugene, it seems like
2:10 am
president biden has a message coming out after a strong state of the union address, and also recent polls show some improvement there for him. when you speak to democrats around washington, some who are really gripped with anxiety about the president's standing and his age, are they starting to feel a little better now? >> they are pretty confident. they were pleased with how the state of the union address went, and they believe that this momentum can continue toward november. what they're also trying to put an emphasis on is the importance of not just cutting out and backing biden but voting for democrats in the house and the senate because there's a real awareness to get biden's agenda accomplished, he's going to need people in congress who can move that forward, opposed to blocking it, and making it very difficult for him to do what he wants to do, which is currently the case with republicans in control of the house and having a significant makeup in the senate. >> senior politics reporter for axios, eugene scott, thank you for starting us off this
2:11 am
morning. and speaking of the state of the union, senator katie britt of alabama is attempting to clean up her strange and misleading response to president biden's address. during her remarks, the first term republican senator linked a graphic account of a young woman's sex trafficking to biden's immigration policies, but that abuse actually happened during president george w.bush's time in office, which was nearly 20 years ago, and it happened in mexico, not the united states. >> did you mean to give the impression that this horrible story happened on president biden's watch? >> no, shannon. look, i very specifically said this is what president biden did during his first 100 days. minutes after coming into office, he stopped all deportations, he halted construction of the border wall. >> but to be clear, the story that you relate is not something that happened under the biden

the east coast, 2:30 out west on this monday morning. i'm jonathan lemire. thanks for being with us. capitalizing off the president's well-received state of the union address, the biden campaign released a new political ad over the weekend. take a look. >> look, i'm not a young guy. that's no secret. but here's the deal. i understand how to get things done for the american people. i led the country through the covid crisis. today we have the strongest economy in the world. i passed a law that lowers prescription drug prices, caps it at $35 a month for seniors. for four years donald trump tried to pass an infrastructure law and he failed. i got it done. now we're rebuilding america. i passed the biggest law in history to combat climate change because our future depend on it. donald trump took away the freedom of women to choose. i'm determined to make roe v. wade the law of the land again. donald trump believed the job of the president is to take care of

donald trump. i believe the job of the president is to fight for you, the american people, and that's what i'm doing. i'm joe biden, and i approve this message. >> can we do one more take? >> look, i'm very young, energetic, and handsome, what the hell am iing down this for? >> that ad will run in critical swing states like pennsylvania and georgia. it's part of a six-week, $36 billion ad baijiu joining us now, shelby talcott. good to see you again. so the biden team, they read the polls. they know that a lot of voters are concerned about the president ice age, and in recent weeks we've seen him take it more and more head on, sometimes with jokes that came up during the state of the union address, and certainly the campaign ad. it's front and center. as you talk to democrats and republicans, what do you u think? do you think this new attack will blunt his age?
2:33 am
when you talk to republicans, there's a fundamental difference between joe biden's age and donald trump's age. they're not giving the president any leeway on this issue. but when you talk to democrats, it's really interesting that they're now being so aggressive with the biden age issue because a few months ago, i think the argument among people close to the white house and even people within the campaign was at the end of the day, voters are not going to vote based on the president's age. they're going to vote based on the issues and based on the fact that he's running against donald trump. the campaign still believes that's true, but as you've said, they've seen the polls. they realize this is more of a serious issue for voters than i think they anticipated, and so we're seeing this sort of reaction to try to not only argue that joe biden is, yes, old, but competent, but also bringing the topic back to his accomplishments, which have been
2:34 am
a little bit overshadowed amid this particular conversation. >> yeah, it seems like a smart tactic, and it comes as there's more and more questions about donald trump's mental acuity, and, of course, done only a couple of years younger than biden. you've got new reporting for semafor and biden's team has ramped up attacks on project 2025, which is trump's agenda were he to be elected again. give us some of the background. >> project 2025 is theest to staff and prep the next trump administration, and while trump's team has been very careful to distance itself from all of these efforts, it is notable that they have a number of former trump allies, and it is very clear that these -- a lot of these initiatives from project 2025 are tied into what donald trump has said he wants to do.

expression used in the southern part of my state, meaning a serious meeting. it was -- i've known bibi for 50 years and he knew what i meant by it. >> what's the come to jesus part? what tough love are you going to give to the prime minister? >> what's happening is he has a right to defend israel, a right to continue to pursue hamas, but he must, he must, he must pay more attention to tin oh sent lives being lost as a consequence of the actions taken. he's hurting, in my view, he's hurting israel more than helping israel by making the rest of the world -- it's contrary to what israel stands for, and i think it's the biggest mistake, and i want to see a cease-fire. >> what is your red line with prime minister netanyahu? do you have a red line? for instance, would invasion of rafah, which you have urged him not to do, would that be a red
2:47 am
line? >> i'm never going to leave israel. the defense of israel is still critical. i'm not going to cut off all weapons so they don't have the iron dome to protect them. the red line is you cannot have 30,000 more palestinians dead as a consequence of going after them. there's other ways to get to, to deal with the trauma caused by hamas. >> we'll talk more about that interview with jonathan capehart when he joins us later on "morning joe." meanwhile netanyahu is rejecting biden's criticism. he said he's doing what the people want and he defied the red line with rafah saying israeli troops will still move into the southern portion of gaza city. joining us from politico, laura seligman. it's good to see you this morning. there's been tension behind the
2:48 am
scenes between netanyahu and biden. it's spilling out into the open. talk about the red line the president is putting town. what do we know of when and where is real is planning to invade rafah, and what do you expect the response to be? >> they've never seen eye to eye, but tensions have increased over the recent weeks over the plans to invade gaza where israel says the remnants of hamas leadership are hiding. israel had plans to invade rafah by ramadan, which actually started yesterday, if the hostages were not released. that deal, that cease-fire deal never came to fruition. israel still has not gone in, but netanyahu insists that's an operation that will soon happen. biden has been pleading with him not at to invade because of the more than 1 million people that
2:49 am
are sheltering there. clearly president biden recognizes the political danger here as more people die in gaza especially in an election year. he's in this tricky position. he finds himself on both sides of the war now. on the one hand, he's providing support and weapons to israel while on the other hand he's trying to deliver aid to gaza, the people starving there. that's why he's trying to thread the needle with air drops the u.s. military has doing and the latest plan to have the army build a pier for the army. >> there's no cease-fire in place as the u.s. had hoped. that appears to be more the fault of hamas. so, lara, if, though, the biden views netanyahu crosses the red line, they go into rafah in the days and weeks ahead, what potentially would be the administration's response? would they attach conditions to aid? would they cut off military supplies? what are some options being
2:50 am
considered? >> well, i think that's a very current discussion right now that officials are looking at. there are multiple things that u.s. officials could do to condition aid. look, the u.s. provides more than $3 billion a year in military aid. they provide iron dome interceptors, they provide munitions. f-35s they're selling to israel. so the u.s. has some leverage here. unfortunately many of those weapons have already gone over to israel, so it already does have a sophisticated army, so that limits the leverage the u.s. has. i don't think the u.s. officials, the biden administration, they've been very strong in their support of israel. i don't think that there will be conditions on military aid, although that is something being discussed. i think it'll be more of the carrot approach in this situation. i think that they're going to incentivize israel with normalizing ties with other arab
2:51 am
countries such as saudi arabia. i think there will be more incentives for them not to go into gaza, to make sure they're being precise in their oppositions, than using the stick in this future operation. >> laura, lastly and briefly, we mentioned earlier in the show the deteriorating situation in haiti. american staff being evacuated from the embassy there. how bad are things on the ground? >> they really are deteriorating. the fact the u.s. military did the secret night mission to air lift in marine security guards and lift out the non-essential employees at the embassy shows what is happening. gangs have been overrunning port-au-prince and other infrastructure. the government is in shambles. there is a humanitarian
2:52 am
disaster. the roads are blocked, food supply is threatened. access to health care and food is limited. it's a bad situation. that's why the biden administration decided finally to take the step and send in marine security to evacuate out non-essential personnel. the next step, it's really unclear right now. u.s. policy has been not to intervene militarily. they don't want u.s. boots on the ground, but something clearly needs to be done to control the situation. it is deteriorating. >> we'll be following it closely in the days ahead. pentagon reporter for "politico," thank you, as always. president biden's state o the union address brought him the biggest fundraising day since he launched the re-election bid. we'll break down the numbers as his campaign looks to build off the well-received speech. coming up on "morning joe," the trump/biden rematch began in

welcome back. the biden campaign hit record fundraising numbers in the wake of the president's state of the union address. in the 24 hours after biden's remarks concluded thursday night, his re-election campaign raked in $10 million. that's a real number, and it's the largest 24-hour haul its campaign and affiliated committees have seen so far. joining us now, white house reporter for bloomberg news, josh wingrove. that's a big fundraising number for 24 hours. it adds to what was a significant advantage in terms of cash on hand. biden already enjoys that over donald trump. we're seeing biden increase the pace of travel. pennsylvania and georgia last week. he is going to new hampshire. he's got michigan and wisconsin coming up. it is biden-mentum.
2:57 am
talk to us about it. >> yeah, we'll see the drum beat continue this week, john. of course, we have the budget today. big day at bloomberg, you know? all our friends watching closely. >> we'll come back to that. >> that'll be good. he is trying to get that momentum going, both in terms of the fundraising you mentioned, and also just in terms of the polls. they're still looking for the rebound off the speech and also the recent news, the economic data we've seen. it's too early to say whether they'll get that on the polls, but the fundraising numbers are encouraging. it is one of the things that democrats point to when they talk about, you know, urging people to be calm about the polls and saying, let's just look at what people are doing, not what they're telling pollsters. that includes voting in special elections, though, of course, pollsters will say that's a different group of folks than show up to vote in a general election. more broadly, donations. the cash advantage here is significant. you know, the broader ecosystem, including aligned pacs, is 2-1
2:58 am
in terms of cash on hand for biden versus those supporting donald trump. some of trump's cash is going to go to his legal fees, so there's a dream there -- a drain there biden doesn't have. they're hoping they have moment in the key swing states. half a dozen or so they're watching closely. a small electoral map this cycle. >> today, he makes his first trip to new hampshire in two years. they think the only state they can flip might be north carolina. i said biden-mentum, but joe-mentum sounds better. he says, show me the budget, show me the priorities. tell us what he is proposing. >> he is talking about tax increases for corporations, including the rate and also speaking to the minimum tax that they would pay, as well as for high earners. of course, biden has always said no tax increases for those

making under $400,000. this will be one to look at. we have a conversation coming, i should say, on taxes, both with respect to the trump tax cuts about to expire. the next congress and president will have to decide what to do about that. more broadly, the deficit isn't in a great place. that'll be an increasing pressure. biden's budget will show about $3 trillion in cumulative deficit reduction other a decade-long period. that's compared to the $20 trillion expected to be added to the debt over that period. $3 trillion, big number, also a fraction of what the borrower is estimated to be right now. that's a big one. another thing we've reported at bloomberg, to andcalled the troe council of economics adviser and the economic council director who got into it a little bit over how to set the forecast for interest

pushing for a lower rate. that has the effect of painting a rosier picture today. it goes to show in the prep of this, rates were all over the place. the economy is doing weird things. markets are trying to churn things out where we're at with inflation. there was a lot of debate head heading into this one. >> the biden administration will continue to point to strong fundamentals of this economy and some polling that suggests americans starting to feel better. now, the trick s will they give the president credit? >> yeah. >> josh wingrove, come back soon. thank you for being with us. thanks for getting up "way too early" with us on this monday morning. "morning joe" starts right now. mr. president, enough is enough. the free world deserves better. and it doesn't have to be this way. we all
